Liberatory Leadership for Individuals and Teams Navigating Real Work

What is Liberatory Leadership?

Liberatory leadership is about leading in ways that do not require people to shrink, perform, or leave parts of themselves behind to succeed.

It draws from traditions rooted in justice, dignity, and collective care that are shaped by leaders and practitioners like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Kazu Haga, and restorative justice frameworks, as well as the work of women like bell hooks, adrienne maree brown, Dolores Huerta, and Gloria Anzaldúa, whose teachings center identity, community, healing, and transformation.

At its core, this approach strengthens culture and relationships so teams can communicate clearly, build trust, and grow together.

From that foundation, leaders are better equipped to:

  • Build trust through honesty and accountability

  • Address conflict directly instead of avoiding it

  • Create environments where feedback is clear, not fear-based

  • Prevent harm by building strong relational foundations, not just reacting to problems after they happen

Liberatory Leadership is about learning how to lead in ways that hold both accountability and humanity at the same time.
